Montjuic Castle played an important part in the history of Barcelona for more than 350 years: its cannons have bombarded the city; it served as a prison and torture centre for more than three centuries; and it was here that the Catalan President Lluís Companys and others were executed by firing squad in 1940.

The Sala Montjuic project is one of the most successful efforts to recover public use of the Castle.
