Buddy is a young boy growing up in the late 1960s in Northern Ireland, when the province is in turmoil due to working class struggle, cultural change and sectarian hatred. Buddy dreams of a future when he can escape from his problems, but in the meantime he takes comfort in his love of films, in the girl he fancies in class and in his entertaining family.
