22:00 - FILM
Grave of the Fireflies (La tumba de las luciérnagas), Isao Takahata, Japan, 1988
Original version in Japanese with subtitles in Spanish
In war, tragedy does not occur only in the trenches. During World War Two, the US Air Force bombs the city of Kobe, where the siblings Seita and Setsuko live. Abandoned to their fate with no roof over their head, the pair struggle to survive.
An animation masterpiece that delicately tells the story of the most innocent victims of war. The most profound and moving film produced by the Ghibli studio, screened now in tribute to the late director Isao Takahata.
Not recommended for spectators under the age of 13 years.
20:45 - LIVE MUSIC
Banda Municipal de Barcelona
The emotion transmitted by Ghibli films would probably not be the same without the soundtrack that accompanies them. That is why, on the night we pay tribute to the studio, we could not fail to take our audience on a journey through some of its best-known musical pieces, composed by Joe Hisaishi. Barcelona Municipal Band will perform arrangements for wind instruments of themes from movies like Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbour Totoro and The Wind Rises, the late-lamented Miyazaki’s last film. Soundtracks from classics of Eastern animated film that also marked an entire generation in the West.
Barcelona Municipal Band is formed by 60 musicians, most playing wind instruments: clarinets, saxophones, flutes, oboes, bassoons, “cobla” instruments, horns, trumpets, trombones and tubas, as well as percussion, bass and piano. A fantastic orchestra for a unique, special concert!
